"Did You Know?" is a citizen's guide for you to be in the "know" pertaining to general information associated with living in Charles Town.

DID YOU KNOW?  Commercial vehicles cannot be parked at a residence in the City without a parking permit that is approved by the Zoning Administrator. There are also some restrictions where parking RVs and trailers is permitted.

DID YOU KNOW?  Trash service in City limits is mandatory. Trash shall not be set out more than twenty-four hours previous to 6:00 a.m. on the day of collection. No garbage, waste or containers for such trash shall be allowed to remain more than twenty-four hours after such collection has been made. Burning trash in the City is not permitted.

DID YOU KNOW?  All dogs in the City have to be tagged and dangerous dog breeds are restricted.

DID YOU KNOW?  During the fall of each year starting in October bulk leaves may be raked to the curb to be picked up by the City at no charge. However, no sticks, branches or other yard waste may be mixed in with the leaves. Curbside brush pickups are done at separate times each month. This service typically ends around the middle of December, but is based on leaf drop. Please contact City Hall regarding pickup times for your neighborhood.

DID YOU KNOW?  Leaves, grass clippings, weeds and garden trimmings may be placed in yard waste bags for pickup throughout the year. Each bag requires a sticker that may be purchased at City Hall at the price of $1 per sticker.

DID YOU KNOW?  A building permit is required for fences, decks, porches, accessory structures, replacing windows, roofing or siding, sidewalks, driveways, swimming pools, renovations, new construction, additions, water heaters, electrical, demolition, asbestos removal. DID YOU KNOW?  If you are doing business within City limits, including service businesses, such as lawn care, contractor or similar business, a City Business License is required. To obtain an application, click here.

DID YOU KNOW?  You can visit the WV Department of Labor’s website at www.wvlabor.com to verify a contractor’s credentials.

DID YOU KNOW?  There are legal fines and penalties for letting your grass grow in excess of 10 inches.

DID YOU KNOW?  Charles Town has an ordinance that requires vacant structures to be registered in a program that requires an annual safety inspection.

DID YOU KNOW?  Citizens Fire Company & Independent Fire Company have smoke detectors they can provide to you free of charge.

DID YOU KNOW?  It is the responsibility of property owners to maintain public sidewalks adjoining their property. This includes snow removal. Snow shall be removed within 12 hours for residential properties and 4 hours within the Downtown Central Business District.

DID YOU KNOW?  There are legal fines and penalties for parking/storing unlicensed, abandoned, wrecked, dismantled, inoperative, rusted, junked or partially dismantled vehicles upon any public or private property in excess of ten days.

DID YOU KNOW?  The West Virginia Office of Economic Opportunity manages the state’s low income weatherization assistance program. To learn more about the program visit their website at http://www.oeo.wv.gov/.

DID YOU KNOW?  The City allows for two classifications of Home Occupations: Minor Home Occupations and Major Home Occupations. Minor Home Occupations may be approved by the Zoning Administrator and Major Home Occupations may be approved by the Board of Zoning Appeals.
